Farewell. The Flying Pig Has Left The Building.

After four years on the Typepad site, eight years total blogging, Newshoggers is closing it's doors today. We've been coasting the last year or so, with many of us moving on to bigger projects (Hey, Eric!) or simply running out of blogging enthusiasm, and it's time to give the old flying pig a rest.

We've done okay over those eight years, although never being quite PC enough to gain wider acceptance from the partisan "party right or wrong" crowds. We like to think we moved political conversations a little, on the ever-present wish to rush to war with Iran, on the need for a real Left that isn't licking corporatist Dem boots every cycle, on America's foreign misadventures in Afghanistan and Iraq. We like to think we made a small difference while writing under that flying pig banner. We did pretty good for a bunch with no ties to big-party apparatuses or think tanks.

Those eight years of blogging will still exist. Because we're ending this typepad account, we've been archiving the typepad blog here. And the original blogger archive is still here. There will still be new content from the old 'hoggers crew too. Ron writes for The Moderate Voice, I post at The Agonist and Eric Martin's lucid foreign policy thoughts can be read at Democracy Arsenal.

I'd like to thank all our regular commenters, readers and the other bloggers who regularly linked to our posts over the years to agree or disagree. You all made writing for 'hoggers an amazingly fun and stimulating experience.

Cornyn The Coward Wants No Part Of More "Question Time" Events

Via NRO, John Cornyn is spinning like a top in a vain attempt to disguise his party's pwnage, describing the debate drubbing they were handed by Obama recently as merely a "photo-opportunity".



�We�re always happy to hear from the president but I don�t really feel any compelling need to do it [on camera],� Texas Sen. John Cornyn, the Republicans' chief campaign strategist, told POLITICO. 



The White House has suggested that it would like Obama to address the Senate GOP Conference, with TV cameras present. Obama administration officials are eager for voters to see Obama operate in a format he relishes � and handle his former Senate colleagues the same way he did last week to House Republicans at their annual retreat. 



Asked about the White House invitation to Senate Republicans, Cornyn said: �For what purpose? Was it for photo op or is it serious? The president can invite Mitch McConnell, John Boehner or anybody he wants for a serious talk about issues.� 


And the truth?



"They don't want anything to do with it," said a GOP insider. "They want the whole thing to just go away."


Heaven forbid the GOP's elite should, you know, get some in-depth, thought-out and realistic policy options and present them with detailled and adept debate against their primary opponent under the public's eye - which would be good for democracy and voter inclusion.The Party of No would rather just say "No" again, for the most venal of reasons.

    Peggy Noonan is also squirming. They can criticize the teleprompter as much as they like, but the fact is in an impromptu situation the president is quick on his feet. He handed them their asses in Baltimore and they will do anything to avoid a repeat.

    What an opportunity to waste. Gingrich would have grabbed it in a heartbeat ( as he did with his impromptu debate with Bill Clinton in NH while he was speaker where Clinton came off looking a little rusty).
