Farewell. The Flying Pig Has Left The Building.

Steve Hynd, August 16, 2012

After four years on the Typepad site, eight years total blogging, Newshoggers is closing it's doors today. We've been coasting the last year or so, with many of us moving on to bigger projects (Hey, Eric!) or simply running out of blogging enthusiasm, and it's time to give the old flying pig a rest.

We've done okay over those eight years, although never being quite PC enough to gain wider acceptance from the partisan "party right or wrong" crowds. We like to think we moved political conversations a little, on the ever-present wish to rush to war with Iran, on the need for a real Left that isn't licking corporatist Dem boots every cycle, on America's foreign misadventures in Afghanistan and Iraq. We like to think we made a small difference while writing under that flying pig banner. We did pretty good for a bunch with no ties to big-party apparatuses or think tanks.

Those eight years of blogging will still exist. Because we're ending this typepad account, we've been archiving the typepad blog here. And the original blogger archive is still here. There will still be new content from the old 'hoggers crew too. Ron writes for The Moderate Voice, I post at The Agonist and Eric Martin's lucid foreign policy thoughts can be read at Democracy Arsenal.

I'd like to thank all our regular commenters, readers and the other bloggers who regularly linked to our posts over the years to agree or disagree. You all made writing for 'hoggers an amazingly fun and stimulating experience.

Thank you very much.

Note: This is an archive copy of Newshoggers. Most of the pictures are gone but the words are all here. There may be some occasional new content, John may do some posts and Ron will cross post some of his contributions to The Moderate Voice so check back.

I don't suppose this is Racism

Commentary By Ron Beasley

While John Boehner has a problem with the highwingnuts in the house the Republicans have an even bigger problem with highwingnuts in the media.  As the Republicans attempt to deny that opposition to Obama is not racially motivated Boss Limbaugh does everything he can to prove them wrong.

Limbaugh: We need segregated buses
In a remark extraordinary even by the standards of conservative talk
show host Rush Limbaugh, the right-wing radio heavyweight declared on
his program Wednesday that the United States needed to return to
racially segregated buses.

Referring to an incident in which a white student was beaten by
black students on a bus, Limbaugh said: I think the guys wrong. I
think not only it was racism, it was justifiable racism. I mean, thats
the lesson were being taught here today. Kid shouldnt have been on
the bus anyway. We need segregated buses it was invading space and
stuff. This is Obamas America.

And It gets even better:

Limbaugh also suggested that racism itself was acceptable.

If homosexuality being inborn is what makes it acceptable, why does
racism being inborn not make racism acceptable? the talk show host
asked. Im sorry I mean, this is the way my mind works. But
apparently now we dont choose racism, we just are racists. We are born
that way. We dont choose it. So shouldnt it be acceptable, excuse
this is according to the way the left thinks about things.

That's right - you are born a racist so it's OK.  In a sense he is right; I think we are born tribal but we learn who is a member of the tribe so we learn to be racist.   That said there is no way this rant can be described as anything but racist.

  3. Good point ay yai yai, I hadn't even thought about Swift but I doubt that their teachers must less the students would really understand the meaning of Gulliver's Travels today. But if Texas has their way students will be studying Newt Gingrich. God save us all!

  4. Holy shit, that Limb fellow obviously is absolutely hellbent on having this go violent. And when that happens, he'll be the one who won't want to have a thing to do with it.
