The Associated Press is reporting that General McChrystal is confirming a fact that Gen. Petreaus has repeatedly asserted --- there is no significant Al Quaeda presence in Afghanistan. What remains of the core leadership cadre is in Pakistan, and it is ability to recruit, train and carry complex operations over long distances has been severely compromised.
One of the few 95% consensus goals that the American public and the American elite have agreed upon is the need to beat down "far enemy" groups and operational infrastructure. That goal seems to have been achieved, or at least as achieved as it can be using military force as 9-11 was planned in Karachi, Kuala Lumpur and Hamburg's apartment blocks.
So what's the point of staying in Afghanistan for another decade or more?
