Farewell. The Flying Pig Has Left The Building.

Steve Hynd, August 16, 2012

After four years on the Typepad site, eight years total blogging, Newshoggers is closing it's doors today. We've been coasting the last year or so, with many of us moving on to bigger projects (Hey, Eric!) or simply running out of blogging enthusiasm, and it's time to give the old flying pig a rest.

We've done okay over those eight years, although never being quite PC enough to gain wider acceptance from the partisan "party right or wrong" crowds. We like to think we moved political conversations a little, on the ever-present wish to rush to war with Iran, on the need for a real Left that isn't licking corporatist Dem boots every cycle, on America's foreign misadventures in Afghanistan and Iraq. We like to think we made a small difference while writing under that flying pig banner. We did pretty good for a bunch with no ties to big-party apparatuses or think tanks.

Those eight years of blogging will still exist. Because we're ending this typepad account, we've been archiving the typepad blog here. And the original blogger archive is still here. There will still be new content from the old 'hoggers crew too. Ron writes for The Moderate Voice, I post at The Agonist and Eric Martin's lucid foreign policy thoughts can be read at Democracy Arsenal.

I'd like to thank all our regular commenters, readers and the other bloggers who regularly linked to our posts over the years to agree or disagree. You all made writing for 'hoggers an amazingly fun and stimulating experience.

Thank you very much.

Note: This is an archive copy of Newshoggers. Most of the pictures are gone but the words are all here. There may be some occasional new content, John may do some posts and Ron will cross post some of his contributions to The Moderate Voice so check back.

Newt Gingrich's shtick: 'pay no attention to that man behind the curtain'

by Jay McDonough

Newt Gingrich, disgraced former Speaker of the House, has a new book out and is making the rounds of political shows, doing his best to appear as the slightly less insane version of Glenn Beck.  Each delivers the same message; America is on the brink of being screwed permanently because Democrats (aka Socialists) and, more specifically, a black guy with Hussein as his middle name have the reigns of power.

When he appeared on Fox News Sunday this week, even host Chris Wallace challenged Gingrich's hyperbole.  He repeated his shtick, also verbatim, on Sean Hannity's show last night and, unlike Chris Wallace, Hannity lapped it up like a hungry puppy.

Wow, if there was ever a need for a fact checker...

Unpacking Gingrich.  First, what Gingrich and Hannity refer to as the country wallowing in high taxes and unprecedented debt.   Here's a graph of marginal tax rates from over the last 100 years.

500px-MarginalIncomeTax

And a graph of debt vs. GDP from 1940 to present and projected to 2020.

Debt vs. gdp 40-10

What's clearly apparent from both charts is both taxes AND debt to GDP have been considerably higher in the past and the country didn't face the collapse of the republic scenario Gingrich and Hannity are so desperately struggling to sell.  (Note: it would be interesting to see the above chart if the Bush era tax cuts and the war in Iraq were not contributing to the debt).

"If the secular socialist machine wins, we're going to be in a country that no longer resembles America"   Newt Gingrich

It's almost laughable.  Secular?  Socialist?  Just a week after the news that the nominal tax rates are the lowest in 60 years and a couple months after the Democrat's health care reform that provided private insurers some 15 million new customers and two weeks after Barack Obama presided over a National Prayer Day, Gingrich is still trying to convince Americans that black is white and down is up.
