Farewell. The Flying Pig Has Left The Building.

Steve Hynd, August 16, 2012

After four years on the Typepad site, eight years total blogging, Newshoggers is closing it's doors today. We've been coasting the last year or so, with many of us moving on to bigger projects (Hey, Eric!) or simply running out of blogging enthusiasm, and it's time to give the old flying pig a rest.

We've done okay over those eight years, although never being quite PC enough to gain wider acceptance from the partisan "party right or wrong" crowds. We like to think we moved political conversations a little, on the ever-present wish to rush to war with Iran, on the need for a real Left that isn't licking corporatist Dem boots every cycle, on America's foreign misadventures in Afghanistan and Iraq. We like to think we made a small difference while writing under that flying pig banner. We did pretty good for a bunch with no ties to big-party apparatuses or think tanks.

Those eight years of blogging will still exist. Because we're ending this typepad account, we've been archiving the typepad blog here. And the original blogger archive is still here. There will still be new content from the old 'hoggers crew too. Ron writes for The Moderate Voice, I post at The Agonist and Eric Martin's lucid foreign policy thoughts can be read at Democracy Arsenal.

I'd like to thank all our regular commenters, readers and the other bloggers who regularly linked to our posts over the years to agree or disagree. You all made writing for 'hoggers an amazingly fun and stimulating experience.

Thank you very much.

Note: This is an archive copy of Newshoggers. Most of the pictures are gone but the words are all here. There may be some occasional new content, John may do some posts and Ron will cross post some of his contributions to The Moderate Voice so check back.

Self Fulfilling Prophecy

Commentary By Ron Beasley

It's not too surprising the angry neocon Zionist Charles Krauthammer is goes on the defensive by playing the victim card.

The world is tired of these troublesome Jews, 6 million -- that number
again -- hard by the Mediterranean, refusing every invitation to
national suicide. For which they are relentlessly demonized, ghettoized
and constrained from defending themselves, even as the more committed
anti-Zionists -- Iranian in particular -- openly prepare a more final
solution.

The reality is Israel has been committing national suicide for over 40 years and now finds itself isolated.

Gideon Levy discusses the prescience of Benjamin Netanyahu.  He predicted that the world would turn against Israel and then he others did everything in their power to make sure it was a self fulfilling prophecy.

We haven't had anyone like him since David Ben-Gurion. He's a genuine
prophet whose every prediction comes true, one after the other -
someone who can really be proud of his accomplishments. Enough mockery,
enough ridicule. For Netanyahu is not only a prophet; his leadership has
swept up the entire country. There is no longer anyone who can stop him
from realizing his vision, and soon the pundits will be writing that
Netanyahu was right.

This country now has a blind captain in
the cockpit, flying his blindfolded passengers with exemplary precision
toward the destination he envisioned. If there had still been any object
of his scaremongering that had not yet been attained before this week,
along came the outrageous seizure of the flotilla, and that goal too was
in the bag.

You're with us or against us - that worked out well for the Bush administration and will work out just as well for Netanyahu and the Israelis.

Some 7 billion human beings (less about 5 million Israeli Jews ) are
wrong. They haven't got a leader like Netanyahu, and that's why they go
on thinking that seizing passenger ships in international waters is an
act of piracy, no different from the deeds committed by the pirates of
Somalia. They think (wrongly of course ) that Israel has no right to
stop a fleet of boats; that the victims are the people of Gaza and the
bleeding passengers, not the naval commandos who raided the ship and
were beaten; and that the aggressors were the troops who were dropped
onto the ship from a helicopter, killing nine civilians with live fire
and wounding dozens.

The world is wrong and Netanyahu, with
us in tow, is right. We will not lift the blockade. For four years it
has yielded not an ounce of benefit, just damage, but what does that
matter? Giddyup! Let's fulfill Netanyahu's vision. We'll become an even
more despised country and won't have a single friend left in the world,
not even the United States. True, it was Netanyahu's predecessor, Ehud
Olmert, who began this terrible landslide with Operation Cast Lead,
after which the world became intolerant of all violent behavior by
Israel, but Netanyahu is following in his path.

Despite it all, his vision has not yet
been realized in full. He gave rise to one hope: an "economic peace"
that would bring prosperity to Palestinians and Israelis. But as yet
there has been no greater saboteur of Israeli exports than Netanyahu,
and soon everything produced here will have to be sold no further afield
than Petah Tikva. Even prophets are entitled to err on occasion, but he
had better not give rise to any more hopes.

From the very beginning Israel has always thought that different rules should apply to them. Krauthammer playing victim again.

The whole point of this relentless international campaign is to deprive Israel of any legitimate form of self-defense. Why, just last week, the Obama administration joined the jackals, and reversed four decades of U.S. practice, by signing onto a consensus document that singles out Israel's possession of nuclear weapons -- thus de-legitimizing Israel's very last line of defense: deterrence.

Yes there is some crazy talk coming out of Iran but as Fareed Zakaria reminded us a year ago the Iranians are not crazy and there is plenty of crazy talk coming out of Israel:

One of Netanyahu's advisers said of Iran, "Think Amalek." The Bible says that the Amalekites were dedicated enemies of the Jewish people. In 1 Samuel 15, God says, "Go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass." Now, were the president of Iran and his advisers to have cited a religious text that gave divine sanction for the annihilation of an entire race, they would be called, well, messianic.

The same rules should apply to Israel and any discussion of nukes in the middle east must include Israel.

Update:

Sully on Krauthammer gets it right.  Go read the entire thing but here's the spot on conclusion.

Something has been wrong here for a very long time, and now it is
inescapable. Until the discourse is rescued from the victims of Israel
Derangement Syndrome, Israel and America will slowly be drawn into wars
they cannot ultimately win, lose every other ally they ever had, and
embolden and fortify the very Islamist forces we are seeking to defuse
and defeat.

  1. Krauthammer is, of course, either insane or suffers from a paranoid personality disorder. I just love how he characterizes Iran, in particular, but me and others that question Israel and its zionist ways (what else can you call them & be PC) using, oh my heavens, a typical Goebbels technic to condemn a lurking phantom danger:
"... even as the more committed anti-Zionists -- Iranian in particular -- openly prepare a more final solution."
So I guess he's up the rhetoric so-to-speak & now we are not just the new modern anti-semites, if we wonder openly about the Jewish population of Israel and its seemly majority supported of gov't policies, but we are [an organized group of] conspirators planning the mass murder of a segment of our fellow human beings. Gads the guy certainly has a fertile if sick mind.
I've wondered at times if Charles et his band paranoids don't use this material as a basic source for some of their more colourful polemics - inserting a particular country name or religion were it may seem appropriate to accomplish the propagandistic goal of generating hatred and blood lust:

  2. It doesn't fail to amaze me that a lot of Israel defenders think "you'd hate Israel no matter what they did" is a really convincing argument
