When the Rolling Stone interview came out, my first thoughts were that Obama had to can McChrystal and that bringing whomever the new commander up to speed would be used as an excuse to add six months onto the July 2011 draw-down start date:
The big question is whether or not the resignation or firing of McChrystal would be used as a pretext for an extension of the Afghan surge and a continuation of the COIN strategy that does not seem to be working.
We are not getting the debate on the desirability or probability of success of using a bastardized version of US counterinsurgency doctrine as written in FM-3-24. But we are not getting an automatic extension either to bring the new guy up to speed. Stasis is an improvement over the probable regression that I expected.
