Farewell. The Flying Pig Has Left The Building.

Steve Hynd, August 16, 2012

After four years on the Typepad site, eight years total blogging, Newshoggers is closing it's doors today. We've been coasting the last year or so, with many of us moving on to bigger projects (Hey, Eric!) or simply running out of blogging enthusiasm, and it's time to give the old flying pig a rest.

We've done okay over those eight years, although never being quite PC enough to gain wider acceptance from the partisan "party right or wrong" crowds. We like to think we moved political conversations a little, on the ever-present wish to rush to war with Iran, on the need for a real Left that isn't licking corporatist Dem boots every cycle, on America's foreign misadventures in Afghanistan and Iraq. We like to think we made a small difference while writing under that flying pig banner. We did pretty good for a bunch with no ties to big-party apparatuses or think tanks.

Those eight years of blogging will still exist. Because we're ending this typepad account, we've been archiving the typepad blog here. And the original blogger archive is still here. There will still be new content from the old 'hoggers crew too. Ron writes for The Moderate Voice, I post at The Agonist and Eric Martin's lucid foreign policy thoughts can be read at Democracy Arsenal.

I'd like to thank all our regular commenters, readers and the other bloggers who regularly linked to our posts over the years to agree or disagree. You all made writing for 'hoggers an amazingly fun and stimulating experience.

Thank you very much.

Note: This is an archive copy of Newshoggers. Most of the pictures are gone but the words are all here. There may be some occasional new content, John may do some posts and Ron will cross post some of his contributions to The Moderate Voice so check back.

Two US "Non-Combat" Troops Dead In Iraq, Nine Injured

By Steve Hynd

If it had been Bush, the Left would've fucking crucified him every time a U.S. soldier died in combat after the end of "combat operations". I don't see why Obama should get a free pass unless we've given up on our principles.

The NY Times reports:

Two American soldiers were killed and nine were wounded on Tuesday when a firefight erupted inside an Iraqi Army base north of Baghdad, American and Iraqi officials said. They were the first American casualties since President Obama declared an official end to the United States combat mission in Iraq a week ago.

I don't know whether to hope Obama came up with the "end of combat ops" bullshit on his own so we can at least admit that he's not at all a principled man - just another lying politico using progressives for their votes - or hope that he was bamboozled into that bit of idiocy by "serious people" like Rahm, the Pentagon and Shillary - in which case he'd be an easily led, lying politico.

But I'm fucking disgusted either way by how few of the Left - "professional" or otherwise - seem to feel the way I do and be willing to say so.

  1. Hi Steve,
While you and I disagree philosophically on a number of issues, I have to say that you consistently stick with your principles.
    Rare quality in these times.

  2. You're disgusted with the lack of criticism over the labeling acrobatics of the 50,000 'non-combat' troops remaining in Iraq now? That probably ain't nothing compared to what will happen at the end of 2011 when these troops are supposed to have left the country.
Suddenly the largest embassy in the world will need a country-wide security perimeter and thousands of 'police agents' in military uniforms and with heavy gear to protect it. And the Left will aquiesce in order not to impact Obama's reelection chances in the face of an incessant Republican onslaught of congressional subpoenas.

  3. I understand the dismay with the Obama gang's complete ineptness regards to communicating anything. "Hope & Change", aka maintaining the status quo, seemed to have been the only euphemism they could master, though it may have required an accessible [euphemism for gullible or fed-up with bs] crowd to succeed. As I've thought for sometime now, Obama et gang read - I wonder if they actually do it. Read that is. - the wrong books for the situation they have painted themselves into. In concocting crapola for military shenanigans it might have been useful for them to remember some of WWIIs all time great euphemisms & build on them, of course, in a less pompous rhetorical fashion than the usual Obama holy holy pontification.
In this regard a useful reference for them would be page 147 of Paul Fussell's book Wartime -Understanding and behaviour in WWII:

My all time favourite is "mopping up" though I'm not sure if modern readers or readers in the select Obama gang would know what mopping actually means never having actually witnesses any manual labour let alone under taken any.

  4. People on the left still have trouble reconciling the seemingly caring candidate with the coldly realpolitik president. Obama may not have much going for him anymore, but he's still got cognitive dissonance on his side.
