Farewell. The Flying Pig Has Left The Building.

Steve Hynd, August 16, 2012

After four years on the Typepad site, eight years total blogging, Newshoggers is closing it's doors today. We've been coasting the last year or so, with many of us moving on to bigger projects (Hey, Eric!) or simply running out of blogging enthusiasm, and it's time to give the old flying pig a rest.

We've done okay over those eight years, although never being quite PC enough to gain wider acceptance from the partisan "party right or wrong" crowds. We like to think we moved political conversations a little, on the ever-present wish to rush to war with Iran, on the need for a real Left that isn't licking corporatist Dem boots every cycle, on America's foreign misadventures in Afghanistan and Iraq. We like to think we made a small difference while writing under that flying pig banner. We did pretty good for a bunch with no ties to big-party apparatuses or think tanks.

Those eight years of blogging will still exist. Because we're ending this typepad account, we've been archiving the typepad blog here. And the original blogger archive is still here. There will still be new content from the old 'hoggers crew too. Ron writes for The Moderate Voice, I post at The Agonist and Eric Martin's lucid foreign policy thoughts can be read at Democracy Arsenal.

I'd like to thank all our regular commenters, readers and the other bloggers who regularly linked to our posts over the years to agree or disagree. You all made writing for 'hoggers an amazingly fun and stimulating experience.

Thank you very much.

Note: This is an archive copy of Newshoggers. Most of the pictures are gone but the words are all here. There may be some occasional new content, John may do some posts and Ron will cross post some of his contributions to The Moderate Voice so check back.

Qaddafi's Byelorussian Mercenaries

Posted by John via Google translation and a retweet by Kal.

Qadafi had a Russian sweetheart. Any connection?

Gaddafi's fighting on the side of the Belarusian partisans

Troops Libyan leader has successfully opposed the NATO bombing by military advisers from the CIS

NATO is in shock - how did the Libyans guerrilla savvy?

Theoretically, the Libyan army has long had to cease their resistance and break up into small units, which would have raced in the desert insurgents. Under such an aggressive onslaught of missile strikes and bombings, who staged the coalition forces, once the 50 thousandth army Qaddafi had long run up. But no! Loyalist troops were not only preserved the ability to fight, but go to the offensive, winning the opposition one city after another. There is a clear organization and use of original methods of warfare. For example, the Libyan military to quickly find and abandoned bulky tanks (which are easily destroyed by NATO aircraft) and briskly move on light jeeps with heavy machine guns. NATO was very puzzled - the effectiveness of air strikes has been reduced to a minimum. Even Saddam Hussein did not took them so cleverly, and the nose was crushed in a matter of days. And here ...

Puzzled and war correspondent "KP" - where the troops Gaddafi such discipline, the guerrilla ingenuity and commendable ability to regroup its old Soviet weapons yet? For all these feel the hand of an experienced professional soldiers. What?

Russian and Ukrainians in the war there

First, we assumed that there has not been without Russian advisors who have experience fighting in Afghanistan and Chechnya. Especially in the Soviet era in Libya were more than thousands of Soviet military advisers. Back in 1969 when a group of soldiers led by Captain Qaddafi coup, in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Libya was an impressive fleet of the Soviet Navy. It was her presence then stopped the invasion of Libya by U.S. troops and the UK. Already in 1974 the USSR began to supply military equipment to the Libyan army. Then in Libya were sent initially 500 Soviet military advisers, but already by 1976 their number has doubled.
But after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 they were recalled to their homeland. Now Libya is not the Russian military. According to official and unofficial sources, Russia was the last time, only the supply of arms to Libya's army - for the most part is not the latest models. Was found in Libya, and traces of the Ukrainian military advisers.
Citizens of the Square are there for the most part only by physicians who are working in Libya under the contract. By the way, and private physicians Gaddafi family - the citizens of Ukraine. The rebels last shell fire back from the advancing government troops. But the forces are not equal: the opposition rolled back farther to the east. Only on a personal contract

Who, then, helps the Army Gaddafi not only to maintain restraint in pressing NATO, but also wisely changed military tactics? As clarified "KP", this role successfully meeting the citizens of Belarus. Belarusian contingent of military advisers in Libya reached before the start of hostilities 500. Some of them, mostly high-ranking military were evacuated from Libya by plane to Minsk. About "Komsomolskaya Pravda" officially informed the counselor of the Embassy of Belarus in Tripoli George Gromyko. He said he did not know the exact number of Belarusian citizens who remained in Libya. It is likely that among them are military spec.

As we found out, "KP" from sources in the headquarters of the Defense Ministry of Belarus, the practice of sending military specialists in Libya there is a long time. Some of them are engaged in the operation of military equipment, many acted as advisers to the commanders of Libyan troops. Present in the country and the staff of the Belarusian GRU. For the most part are officers of the former 334-Detachment Special Forces stationed in Marina Gorka, near Minsk. But they all entered into individual contracts with the Libyan authorities and received funding from them.

Salary mercenary - $ 3000

We managed to get through to one of the Belarusian "mercenaries" on the phone with the prefix 218 21 (assigned to Libya). The officer was laconic. In Libya, he was more than a year. Enlisted under the contract, which has nothing to do with his country's Ministry of Defense - so to speak, on their own initiative. For their services the Army Jamahiriya receives almost $ 3000 a month. According to Michael, as he introduced himself in Libya a few hundred military specialists from Belarus. Advisors are not directly involved in combat operations against insurgents, but are constantly in combat positions. Many were still in Afghanistan, and later served in elite units of the Defense Ministry of Belarus. Part of the officers trained at the base of Russian special forces units.

- Officially, Libya, military experts of Belarus not sent - told Komsomolskaya Pravda on the phone Belarusian military attache in Tripoli Igor Kachugin. - It may be that someone and enter into contracts for various activities - doctors, oilmen, it is possible that among them were military experts. But this is private contracts that do not have to state in any way. And we do not have accurate information about their existence ...

At the same Minsk, as told to "KP" informed sources, there is a kind of "labor exchange" for retired military, ready to apply his military experience abroad. Places to "travel" - Venezuela, Cd'Ivoire, Libya ...
Ads on the "job" will not find - the company itself classified and offers a suitable "soldier of fortune" opportunity to earn extra money on a military career. Among candidates for military advisers and many Russians who are offering to contract with foreign firms for the implementation of abstract works, in fact, providing military service in a foreign country. Especially popular specialties in air defense, naval and aircraft mechanics, combined-arms position is not below the level of battalion commander.

Very similar to what the Belarusian advisors and managed to keep the Libyan army in the disciplinary framework and prompted by the mobile command and control tactics with insurgents and NATO air strikes. Belarusian partisans in Libya until the win!

And from Le Monde...

Belarusian mercenaries fighting alongside al-Gaddafi

Hundreds of mercenaries assist the Belarusian regime of Muammar Gaddafi to face NATO air strikes, wrote Wednesday Russian tabloid Komsomolskaya Pravda. These soldiers, most of whom are former members of the 334th unit of the elite forces of Belarus, have all signed individual contracts and are paid by the Libyan regime, the newspaper said, citing sources within the state-Major Belarusian.

Among them, there are men in charge of the operation and maintenance of military equipment, advisers and instructors, and representatives of military intelligence, the source said. Much of the Libyan military equipment is of Russian and Soviet design, and Belarusians are aware of the operation. One of these mercenaries, contacted by telephone by the newspaper, said that his salary was $ 3000 dollars a month and confirmed that there were several hundreds of Belarusian military in Libya.

He said the men did not take part in combat, but are present on the frontline. Many fought in Afghanistan during the Soviet era or belonged to the elite troops. Regularly denounced by opponents in an armed struggle against the regime of Colonel Qaddafi, the Libyan presence of mercenaries, particularly in Africa, has been confirmed, but the number of armed men been different assessments.
