Farewell. The Flying Pig Has Left The Building.

Steve Hynd, August 16, 2012

After four years on the Typepad site, eight years total blogging, Newshoggers is closing it's doors today. We've been coasting the last year or so, with many of us moving on to bigger projects (Hey, Eric!) or simply running out of blogging enthusiasm, and it's time to give the old flying pig a rest.

We've done okay over those eight years, although never being quite PC enough to gain wider acceptance from the partisan "party right or wrong" crowds. We like to think we moved political conversations a little, on the ever-present wish to rush to war with Iran, on the need for a real Left that isn't licking corporatist Dem boots every cycle, on America's foreign misadventures in Afghanistan and Iraq. We like to think we made a small difference while writing under that flying pig banner. We did pretty good for a bunch with no ties to big-party apparatuses or think tanks.

Those eight years of blogging will still exist. Because we're ending this typepad account, we've been archiving the typepad blog here. And the original blogger archive is still here. There will still be new content from the old 'hoggers crew too. Ron writes for The Moderate Voice, I post at The Agonist and Eric Martin's lucid foreign policy thoughts can be read at Democracy Arsenal.

I'd like to thank all our regular commenters, readers and the other bloggers who regularly linked to our posts over the years to agree or disagree. You all made writing for 'hoggers an amazingly fun and stimulating experience.

Thank you very much.

Note: This is an archive copy of Newshoggers. Most of the pictures are gone but the words are all here. There may be some occasional new content, John may do some posts and Ron will cross post some of his contributions to The Moderate Voice so check back.

Sandmonkey, Cheerleader for Egyptian Democracy

By John Ballard

When I find a string of tweets that look like they belong together in a coherent form, my impulse is to grab them quick before they get swept away like sand sculptures at the beach. This morning's composition is fourth in a collection beginning here, here and here.

Mahmoud Salem aka Sandmonkey is a long-time treasure of the blogworld whose commentaries and insights have been drumming away for years. Since January his  blog posts have been models of journalistic excellence. Like everyone else, prior to the revolution all he could do was point to an endless string of problems and issues crying out for correction. Take a look at this post from last year. Finally, he is apparently writing a book.

This message starts here...

The political shelf life of any politician in Egypt now is 1 week.
Remember when Hamzawy was relevant? Seems so long ago!

Watch as the egyptian people turn on the salafis..watch as the MB freak out & start distancing themselves from them. It's beautiful.
Watch as the MB gets so freaked out they come out saying that THEY "want a civil state".
Watch as the Sufis stand up to the islamists.
Watch as the poeple on the street start creating a parallel structure to the parties, but more representitive & r doing it on their own.
Watch as 10 year old's who went to vote with their parents at the referendum start having this experience engrained in their psyche. #HOPE
Watch as the 12 year olds start watching all the big issues debated now on TV, & how it will inform them 6 years from now when they vote.
Watch as teens in general watch the protest & take notes, & see what they will do when they go to college.
Watch as an entire society becomes politically aware, believes in freedom of speech, confronting corruption & protesting as their right. Watch as society becomes self-correcting, as the forces of darkness become unable to deceive day by day. WATCH!

And please look around at every stupid person that u know in a position of power & think: BOY, UR DAYS ARE NUMBERED!

In 8 years, we will be seeing a whole new Egypt. We can't see it now, coz things are happening so fast TIME feels like its standing still. And just watch the ripple effect of that hit everyone & everything, EVERYWHERE! What we started will echo down in history. I mean, people, u think the military will take over? They are scared shitless. They are trying their best to control this powder-keg. :)

Watch as they will do anything they can to be out in 7 months. This is how far we have come: Military rule now has an end date! You fear we are losing the revolution? It's already everywhere. You just don't see it outside ur group of friends. U have noo idea!

People, u worry about the Islamists? They angerd the sufis, the hippies of Islam, who outnumber them 2:1.
Islamists meen bas!
