Who could have predicted this? (Ummm...)
General Carter Ham, head of U.S. Africa command, told a Senate hearing Washington should not provide arms to the rebels without a better idea of who they were.
Asked if there was an emerging stalemate, he replied: "I would agree with that at present, on the ground."
The U.S. may consider sending troops into Libya with a possible international ground force that could aid the rebels, according to the general who led the military mission until NATO took over.
But Army Gen. Carter Ham also told lawmakers Thursday that added American participation would not be ideal, and ground troops could erode the international coalition and make it more difficult to get Arab support for operations in Libya.
Gee, you thunk?! Libya is the very definition of a mission creeping towards a quagmire. Well done, Shrillary and the rest of the neolib interventionists!
P.S. If you're wondering why the neolibs aren't so shrill about Bahrain, well there are $60 billion reasons.
Unlike most of my poorly informed countrymen, I vote for foreign policy when I vote for president. If I had wanted John McCain for president, I would have voted for John McCain for president. As it is most of President Obama's major foreign policy decisions would have been the same as President McCain's. We've withdrawn from Iraq on the schedule negotiated by the Bush Administration and not a second faster; the president has (IMO foolishly) doubled down on military engagement in Afghanistan; and now there's the predictable stalemate in Libya.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing that will secure Obama's second term is if the Republicans run a manifest idiot. In other words he's in pretty fair shape.
Yep, Obama's definitely delegated his FP to Hillary and her faction.
ReplyDeleteI do think, though, that the GOP has the same problem the Dems had in 2004 and I think they'll go for the same solution: put up a "grey man" candidate who doesn't excite any part of the base against him too much but also doesn't excite the electorate to vote for him.
