Farewell. The Flying Pig Has Left The Building.

Steve Hynd, August 16, 2012

After four years on the Typepad site, eight years total blogging, Newshoggers is closing it's doors today. We've been coasting the last year or so, with many of us moving on to bigger projects (Hey, Eric!) or simply running out of blogging enthusiasm, and it's time to give the old flying pig a rest.

We've done okay over those eight years, although never being quite PC enough to gain wider acceptance from the partisan "party right or wrong" crowds. We like to think we moved political conversations a little, on the ever-present wish to rush to war with Iran, on the need for a real Left that isn't licking corporatist Dem boots every cycle, on America's foreign misadventures in Afghanistan and Iraq. We like to think we made a small difference while writing under that flying pig banner. We did pretty good for a bunch with no ties to big-party apparatuses or think tanks.

Those eight years of blogging will still exist. Because we're ending this typepad account, we've been archiving the typepad blog here. And the original blogger archive is still here. There will still be new content from the old 'hoggers crew too. Ron writes for The Moderate Voice, I post at The Agonist and Eric Martin's lucid foreign policy thoughts can be read at Democracy Arsenal.

I'd like to thank all our regular commenters, readers and the other bloggers who regularly linked to our posts over the years to agree or disagree. You all made writing for 'hoggers an amazingly fun and stimulating experience.

Thank you very much.

Note: This is an archive copy of Newshoggers. Most of the pictures are gone but the words are all here. There may be some occasional new content, John may do some posts and Ron will cross post some of his contributions to The Moderate Voice so check back.

Founder of Blackwater-Xe Accused Of Murder, Gun Running To Iraq

By Steve Hynd

Sworn statements to a Virginia federal court accuse Blackwater founder Eric Prince of using murder to silence witnesses to criminal acts by Blackwater, of smuggling weapons into Iraq to sell for profit, of destroying evidence of criminal acts and lying to federal agencies.

A former Blackwater employee and an ex-US Marine who has worked as a security operative for the company have made a series of explosive allegations in sworn statements filed on August 3 in federal court in Virginia. The two men claim that the company's owner, Erik Prince, may have murdered or facilitated the murder of individuals who were cooperating with federal authorities investigating the company. The former employee also alleges that Prince "views himself as a Christian crusader tasked with eliminating Muslims and the Islamic faith from the globe," and that Prince's companies "encouraged and rewarded the destruction of Iraqi life."

In their testimony, both men also allege that Blackwater was smuggling weapons into Iraq. One of the men alleges that Prince turned a profit by transporting "illegal" or "unlawful" weapons into the country on Prince's private planes. They also charge that Prince and other Blackwater executives destroyed incriminating videos, emails and other documents and have intentionally deceived the US State Department and other federal agencies. The identities of the two individuals were sealed out of concerns for their safety.

These allegations, and a series of other charges, are contained in sworn affidavits, given under penalty of perjury, filed late at night on August 3 in the Eastern District of Virginia as part of a seventy-page motion by lawyers for Iraqi civilians suing Blackwater for alleged war crimes and other misconduct.

Read the whole remarkable, and shocking, story by Jeremy Scahill at The Nation.

If all that Scahill writes is true, I wonder if the Crusader Prince will use the C Street King David defense for his actions? Anything someone "chosen by God" does, no matter how criminal, is justified.

And if all the statements contain is true, it's still only the tip of the iceberg.

General Petraeus "lost" over 170,000 weapons in Iraq. His close aide, Lt. Col. Lavonda Selph pled guilty to accepting bribes in connection with another gun smuggling operation. At around the same time, his subordinate Col. Theodore Westhusing was found dead in Iraq, apparently a suicide. A note found by him said he could not "support a [mission] that leads to corruption, human rights abuses and liars," and that he didn't know who to trust among his superiors any more.

There are 154 open criminal investigations into allegations of bribery, conflicts of interest, defective products, bid rigging and theft in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait. Jonathan Landay of McLatchy newspapers said in a March 2009 interview that he believes U.S. officials -- not U.S. contractors, but officials -- are complicit and involved in the widespread corruption there.

Meanwhile, whatever happened to the gagging orders preventing investigation of the wrongdoings of 70 major companies involved in Iraq, the orders Bush imposed and that Henry Waxman complained about last June, calling Iraq "the largest war profiteering in history"? Are those orders still in place? Does anyone know?

I'm going to say it again - I find it difficult to believe that senior administration and military figures have not themselves been enriched by some of these missing biliions. Are we really to believe that corruption, graft and bribery - some of which involved missing weaponry which was sold on the black market and used to kill US soldiers - was widespread up to the level of Lt. Colonel, but no further?

Update: Via MoJo, the two sworn statement filings are here and here.

  1. Did Col. Westhusing bother to say what the liars were lying about?

  2. "I find it difficult to believe that senior administration and military figures have not themselves been enriched by some of these missing billions."
I'll 'second' that. Remember that initial $20 Billion providing to the CA (Coalition Provisional Authority)? You know the one they were tossing around bundles of and snapping pics of before $13 Billion of it came up missing.... oopsies.
I WOULD surprised if ANY of the Busies that cycled thru Iraq did NOT 'stuff their pockets' (an offshore account somewhere) and, that leaves out your everyday pedestrian military-industrial war profiteering.
I've had just about enough of the 'let's not [even bother] look backward, let's move forward' TALK...
I want these 'christian's [very small 'c' christians, obviously] hands on bible in court dockets, YESTERDAY!

  3. Right. And in response to "kennethetucker," what about the $2.3 trillion the former Sec/Def Rumsfeld ADMITTED he can't account for? Hmmm...that would pay for a lot of national deficit reduction. Can't we find a cell adjacent to Madoff's for Don the Con?

  4. Shocking, just shocking. Coincidentally with the invasion of Iraq, itself based on corrupting truth about WMD's there, Dubai experienced a building boom of staggering proportions related to its size and location in the world. Dubai also has secretive banking laws. The CPA ordered money by the ton, not by denomination. Corruption of this magnitude has to involve the highest level of the military, the contractors, politicians and so forth, otherwise it wouldn't be allowed to exist. Incidentally,Dubai is now a ghost town with more than 3,000 cars abandoned at the airport. The Pentagon is the government inside the government and refuses to be accountable because it does have to be.

  5. I just can't take it anymore. All these BASTARDS robbing and stealing and SCREWING the tax payers of this country to the point of bankruptcy. THEN THEY CALL ME UNPATRIOTIC IF I SAY END IT. Everything is ASSBACKWARDS. WRONG IS RIGHT. BAD IS GOOD. MURDERING INNOCENCE IS PATRIOTIC. THAT'S WHY IF YOU DON'T PAY YOUR TAXES YOU LOSE EVERYTHING. They need your money to steal. All this deceit and greed and corruption just in thirty years can wipe out two hundred years of LIFE ,LIBERTY and the PURSUIT of HAPPINESS! All those millions upon millions of hard working patriotic Americans throughout our history, just tossed to garbage heap for just a few greedy ROTTEN MUTHA FUCCUZ!!!
