Farewell. The Flying Pig Has Left The Building.

Steve Hynd, August 16, 2012

After four years on the Typepad site, eight years total blogging, Newshoggers is closing it's doors today. We've been coasting the last year or so, with many of us moving on to bigger projects (Hey, Eric!) or simply running out of blogging enthusiasm, and it's time to give the old flying pig a rest.

We've done okay over those eight years, although never being quite PC enough to gain wider acceptance from the partisan "party right or wrong" crowds. We like to think we moved political conversations a little, on the ever-present wish to rush to war with Iran, on the need for a real Left that isn't licking corporatist Dem boots every cycle, on America's foreign misadventures in Afghanistan and Iraq. We like to think we made a small difference while writing under that flying pig banner. We did pretty good for a bunch with no ties to big-party apparatuses or think tanks.

Those eight years of blogging will still exist. Because we're ending this typepad account, we've been archiving the typepad blog here. And the original blogger archive is still here. There will still be new content from the old 'hoggers crew too. Ron writes for The Moderate Voice, I post at The Agonist and Eric Martin's lucid foreign policy thoughts can be read at Democracy Arsenal.

I'd like to thank all our regular commenters, readers and the other bloggers who regularly linked to our posts over the years to agree or disagree. You all made writing for 'hoggers an amazingly fun and stimulating experience.

Thank you very much.

Note: This is an archive copy of Newshoggers. Most of the pictures are gone but the words are all here. There may be some occasional new content, John may do some posts and Ron will cross post some of his contributions to The Moderate Voice so check back.

Arabiya Says Thanks

By John Ballard

Word is spreading about last night's events in Bahrain.
This is the opening of the Human Rights Watch release.

Bahrain authorities should immediately release prominent opposition and rights activist Abdul Hadi al-Khawaja, or bring him before an independent judge and charge him with a recognizable offense, Human Rights Watch said today.

Human Rights Watch also called on authorities to allow an independent medical doctor immediate and unconditional access to al-Kahawaja, 50, whom witnesses say was badly beaten by riot police when they raided his daughter's home in the predawn hours of April 9, 2011. Al-Khawaja, an opposition and rights activist, has worked for national and international human rights organizations, including the Bahrain Center for Human Rights and Dublin-based Front Line.

Our tireless Tweeting activist/journalist Angry Arabiya, sends timely updates and a word of thanks, starting here...

cant stop thinking: how badly is my father beaten, is he lying on the ground in a prison cell, is he in pain..
my father was thrown on the ground right here in my apartment, unconscious, bleeding & still being cursed & beaten.
he was dragged down the same steps that he takes my daughter up & down over & over becuz he knows she likes climbing the stairs.
I thank God 4 everything he has given us, I pray he gives my detained family comfort 2night, Plz God ease their pain, plz give them patience
cant 4get my dad thrown on steps not moving, my husband & bros in law dragged behind like prisoners of war with their heads forcibly lowered

@hnkhan I think the person who first attacked my father was a pakistani, he seemed 2 know 1 arabic word, & threatened me in english later
I've had many pakistani frnds & kno these security forces dont represent ur good ppl. Plz speak out against them brother.

@Philjxn they took him away unconscious, we havnt seen or heard from him since

@PurpleGimp thank u so much 4 ur help

@Tafsir_Ali a journalist who lived in Palestine told me there was so much similarity between alkhalifa & israeli methods

@eylulgizzem I'm very worried n scared for my family. but I realize that many others r suffering the same or even worse than I am

@Tafsir_Ali there r ppl like that everywhere. lemme tell u abt something that happened the other day  i was with ppl from int. organization n we were at a place filled with military & riot police. 1 masked police was speakin to us
he kept tryin to find out if I was shia or sunni, askin where I'm from & my name. when I refused to answer he got v. angry
he started threatening me, @ that point one of the ppl with me asked him "why are u wearing a mask?"
he stopped, kept silent for awhile, n looked very nervous. then said: "these r orders"
he then looked up @ me n started shouting to other police "wheres my prayer mat!!!" over and over
tehy brought him the mat, n he got up and started praying, infront of us, with his mask on

@eylulgizzem u askin does, thank u for caring abt us
