Farewell. The Flying Pig Has Left The Building.

Steve Hynd, August 16, 2012

After four years on the Typepad site, eight years total blogging, Newshoggers is closing it's doors today. We've been coasting the last year or so, with many of us moving on to bigger projects (Hey, Eric!) or simply running out of blogging enthusiasm, and it's time to give the old flying pig a rest.

We've done okay over those eight years, although never being quite PC enough to gain wider acceptance from the partisan "party right or wrong" crowds. We like to think we moved political conversations a little, on the ever-present wish to rush to war with Iran, on the need for a real Left that isn't licking corporatist Dem boots every cycle, on America's foreign misadventures in Afghanistan and Iraq. We like to think we made a small difference while writing under that flying pig banner. We did pretty good for a bunch with no ties to big-party apparatuses or think tanks.

Those eight years of blogging will still exist. Because we're ending this typepad account, we've been archiving the typepad blog here. And the original blogger archive is still here. There will still be new content from the old 'hoggers crew too. Ron writes for The Moderate Voice, I post at The Agonist and Eric Martin's lucid foreign policy thoughts can be read at Democracy Arsenal.

I'd like to thank all our regular commenters, readers and the other bloggers who regularly linked to our posts over the years to agree or disagree. You all made writing for 'hoggers an amazingly fun and stimulating experience.

Thank you very much.

Note: This is an archive copy of Newshoggers. Most of the pictures are gone but the words are all here. There may be some occasional new content, John may do some posts and Ron will cross post some of his contributions to The Moderate Voice so check back.

The politics of this attack are very unclear at this point.

Update, a few hours later.

?Here is the link. to the following translation.

Anders Behring Breivik (32) who has been arrested for the bomb in the city center, and mass killing of vermin, has lived in Oslo's West End in his life, before he announced relocation of Hedmark for a month.

VG has received confirmation from several independent sources that it was Anders Behring Breivik, who was arrested by armed police after the mass killings of Utriday.

VG was also present when the emergency squad took action against the flat 32-year-old susceptible west of Oslo. Several foreign media have also named Breivik as the perpetrator.

1311378457373_34[1] Unknown to the police

From what VG has reported Breivik is unknown to the police before. He should have been convicted of minor traffic matters for over 10 years ago. He has no background in the military, apart from regular military service.

A childhood friend of Breivik says to VG Nett that he should have been right-wing in the late 20's, and posted a series of controversial opinions on Facebook.

His profile was deaktiviert [??] after a while. He later created a new profile where it mainly is posted links to music videos.

Shortly before midnight police went into action against the apartment as a 32-year-old susceptible west of Oslo. Breivik must have lived there with his mother.

- I put the TV at home and read newspapers. Suddenly the police came to the door and we were asked to leave the apartment immediately. I have not met in person, but saw him when he visits his mother, said neighbor Hemen Noaman (27), who lives on the same floor.

Critical of Islam

In online debates marks Anders Behring Breivik as well read, and one with strong opinions about Norwegian politics. He promotes a very conservative opinions, which he also called nationalist. He expresses himself strongly opposed to multiculturalism - that cultural differences can live together in a community.

Breivik has had many posts on the site Document.no, an Islam-critical site that publishes news and commentary.

In one of the posts he states that politics today no longer revolves around socialism against capitalism, but that the fight is between nationalism and internationalism. He expressed clear support for the nationalist mindset.

Anders Breivik Behring has also commented on the Swedish news articles, where he makes it clear that he believes the media have failed by not being "NOK" Islam-critical.

Created Twitter account

Six days ago he released his first and only message on the social networking site Twitter, where he laid out a famous quote by British philosopher John Stuart Mill sosialliberalisten.

"One person with a belief is equal to the force of 100 000 WHO garden only interests."

On Facebook provide Breivik to be director of his own company Geofarm. He claims he has an education in finance and religion, but does not disclose what universities he should have studied at. The only school he gives are Oslo Handel.

Ran his own company

Breivik established firm GeoFrame in 2009, and stated that the company should engage in the cultivation of vegetables, roots and tubers. The company in this industry you can get access to large amounts of fertilizer.

In the end of June / July, he moved well out of the apartment in Oslo west and rural Rena in Hedmark.

Among other interests he expresses his admiration for Winston Churcill, classical music and Max Manus.

The 32-year-old man has been active in video games and has been involved in the online game World of Warcraft. In connection with this game, he posted a picture of a pistoll>.

Another update...

Rune Thomas Ege is a journalist reported earlier to be at the scene of the camp where the killing took place.

His Twitter messages are horrifying.
As I write he sends this...

Breaking from #VGNett Police confirms at least 80 killed at Utspan> #oslexpl

Unfortunately our sources were right. At least 80 killed at UtHard to find words to describe the tragedy #oslexpl

?Update Saturday Morning.

I found this Twitter stream from Jetil B. Stensrud, a Norwegian journalist whose background includes the Guardian and other publications. Here is the Chirpstory link where I collected his messages.
This narrative and links are from this man's messages.
Check the links for images and videos. The first one is heartbreaking.

Just woke up. 87 people now confirmed dead on UtTotal death toll is 94, including Oslo bombings. Lost for words.

Norway Latest update: Police still searching Utnd the surround waters where 84 so far are confirmed dead. 7 people dead after Oslo bombings. Breaking: raw footage from the rescue operation at Utplease be advised, contains graphic images). http://t.co/n6C61Mm BREAKING: Eye-witnesses speaking to Norwegian paper VG are convinced that there were two shooters on UtQuotes to follow.

Utye-witness: "I'm certain that I heard shooting from two different directions. Then I saw another man, about 180 cm tall ....who was firing at us. He was not wearing a police uniform," he said to VG.  Latest: as death toll continues to rise (Oslo/Utow 91 confirmed dead) eye-witnesses are describing TWO shooters. Only one in custody.  The Utye-witnesses will inevitably be traumatised. This information is based on their accounts of what happened. Not confirmed.

Here is the article containing those quotes about a possible second gunman (who then will be at large): http://t.co/i79d9ub  Another eye-witness from Utspeaking to Dagbladet: "There was shooting every 10 secs for an entire hour."  Utye-witness: "He [the gunman] was celebrating, and kept shouting 'victoriously'". Quotes from http://t.co/wXqPs3e  It's not the time for comparisons, but the Norway attacks have more casualties than Virginia Tech/Columbine combined. The scale of this..  ..is really beyond comprehension. The worst tragedy in modern Norwegian history. We're all in shock. We're all mourning relatives today.

BREAKING: The gunman, Anders Behring Breivik, was a former member of Labour's opposition [youth] party, Fremskrittspartiet.

For those who ask: The Oslo/Utuspect, Anders Behring Breivik, has been charged with 'acts of terrorism' by Norwegian police.   There was, apparently, some (unarmed) security. But when someone shows up with police uniform, what can you do? @johnrileys That's maximum sentence by Norwegian law. However, he can be kept for longer in isolation (special circumstances).  No-one, not even police, can be armed by Norwegian law. According to NRK, the 32-year-old suspect has 'purchased large quantities of fertilizer' at Felleskjin Rena, Hedmark.

BREAKING: A spokeswoman for Felleskjhas confirmed that the suspect was a customer, and that he could by law purchase unlimited amounts.  It was at this store that Anders Behring Breivik purchased fertilizer used in the Oslo bombing: http://t.co/FMUX4tF  Norwegian SWAT has just raided a home in Tomter, 40 km outside of Oslo, after a suspicious phone call, writes Smaalenene.no.  SWAT arrested one man who is thought to have sympathised with yesterday's tragic events in Oslo and UtThe man in custody owns two weapons, and that he's identity is know by both psychiatric institutions and police.

BREAKING: Here's the link from the raid this morning at Tomter. Police say 'there is no connection to Uthooter yet' http://t.co/4Xhb36D

?In a separate post I have put up Google translations of two powerful first-person narratives from campers who escaped the massacre.
Don't miss reading these.

?Time has an account that will give you chills.

The Oslo bomb blast, some time earlier,  appears to have been a move to make the young people at the camp cooperate with someone appearing to be a policeman. The calculated evil of this man is hard to imagine.

When he arrived at the island, Breivik found people hurrying into the main house at the retreat. Some were crying, walking arm-in-arm as they tried to make sense out of the images of devastation filling TV screens in the aftermath of the Oslo bombing, which by now was being described as Norway's 9/11 moment. The guests on the island had particular reason to be rocked by the events in Oslo's government quarter. Each year for as long as anyone can remember, the youth wing of the Norwegian Labor Party has gathered here. Founded in 1887, Labor is Norway's largest political party and has been the major force in the country since the Second World War, giving up power for only brief periods to the Conservative Party. Gathered at the retreat of the Labor Party's youth wing were the country's future leaders, the teenage children of the ruling elite. By the time Breivik approached the main house, witnesses recall, about 80 people had gravitated there. "We had all gathered in the main house to talk about what had happened in Oslo," a survivor, a 16-year-old called Hana, told the Aftenposten, an Oslo daily.

Breivik, in his policeman get-up and and now wearing earplugs, urged the people to move into the main house. "I'd like to gather everyone," he said, according to Hana. Then, Breivik, brandishing an automatic machine gun, ran into the main house and opened fire on the crowd.

With the eyes of the world on Oslo, it took more than an hour for Norwegian police to comprehend and respond to the massacre that was unfolding at this idyllic island retreat. Children ran screaming out of the house and across the grounds, only to be gunned down in their tracks. Breivik, according to witnesses, remained calm, methodically seeking out his victims as they ran, into the hollows and behind the stones and bushes where they attempted to hide. He chased them to the shores of the island, a thin, 500-yard strip of land in a gray lake in the Norwegian woods. Children jumped into the water, attempting to swim away. Some managed to reach boats that began to appear to rescue survivors.
